Lit.Eifel: " Von Norden rollt ein Donner"

Oct 10, 2025

Schleiden-Gemünd

Every day, 19-year-old Jannes and his family drive their sheep across the Lüneburg Heath. But there is a fermenting unrest in the area, the wolf is back. Sheep kills are increasing and with them conflicts in the village, which quickly become political.

Can homeland security justify violence? As the situation comes to a head and threatens to escalate into vigilante justice, Jannes flees to his sheep on the heath. Until he repeatedly encounters a strange woman there. He begins to follow her and gradually uncovers the secrets of this supposedly desirable landscape, coming across brutality, ethnic ideology - and a profound silence. Markus Thielemann delves deep into the abysses of an "original German" idyll with his captivating anti-homeland novel.

  • "An absurd thought occurs to him: maybe it's the country that wants to tell him something, that wants to do something to him, maybe it's the heath."
  • A literary examination of the social and political climate in the West German provinces
  • About home and violence, repression and silence, tradition and responsibility
  • For the readers of Lukas Rietzschel and Alina Herbing's "Niemand ist bei den Kälbern"

Markus Thielemann, born in 1992, lives in Hanover. He studied geography and philosophy in Osnabrück, then literary writing in Hildesheim. "Von Norden rollt ein Donner" is his second novel.
